Each morning at sunrise, a team from On the Water Boat Cleaning arrives at the Boston Sailing Center to clean the cruising boats used the previous day. They start inside and work their way out, using a checklist to guide them while giving extra attention to areas that need it. Boats often return with signs of a full day on the water and beyond – sand from harbor island visits, cooking supplies from meals prepared onboard, and general use from active adventures – the scope of work varies from boat to boat.
For boats scheduled to head out on their week-long cruises, the cleaning process is more extensive, sometimes taking over an hour. When needed, the team will also dive into the J24s and J27s. BSC launch drivers support the process by assisting with the midrange and daysailing fleets.
On the Water Boat Cleaning was founded over ten years ago by Brian Coleman and Noah Kaplowitch when they were in high school. They brought together a shared passion for boating and a commitment to quality craftsmanship, launching their business with a hands-on approach and an eye for detail. Since 2020, they have worked with BSC as part of the broader effort to keep the fleet maintained and ready for use. Over that time, they have become a consistent presence on the docks and part of the daily rhythm of operations.
During the supply shortages of 2020 and 2021, when many cleaning products were difficult to source, they adapted by securing and managing their own inventory to maintain continuity in their work. In recent years, they have also incorporated environmentally conscious products and practices into their process that have been recognized by the Green Boating Awards.
Their work is typically completed by the time BSC opens to members and students at 9 a.m., allowing the fleet to be turned over and ready for the day ahead.
That consistency plays an important part in day-to-day operations at the Boston Sailing Center. On the Water Boat Cleaning aims to maintain a consistent standard across the fleet.
