Coastal Passage Making September 2012

The early September 2012 CPM featured 5 days of headwinds. Some were light, some were strong with wipeout-level gusts. But any time you wanted to know where the wind would come from, you just asked where Melissa wanted to go. In the event, we went through the Cape Cod Canal, down Buzzards Bay to Cuttyhunk, up Vineyard Sound to Oak Bluffs, and then back home through Woods Hole.

After an uneventful motorsail to Sandwich on Thursday evening, we went through the Canal Friday morning with a low-lying cover of fog. The towboat North Sea announced his presence with a long horn blast, and when we hailed him on channel 13 he was succinctly eloquent: "I hope you're not in the middle."

Our next surprise was to find the Railroad Bridge down.

At the end of the foggy Canal was a beautiful light air sail down Buzzards Bay to Cuttyhunk. Everyone worked on their Facebook profiles.

In Cuttyhunk, we watched a woman sailing a small dinghy around the half-empty Pond before we made dinner on the grill.

Based on the forecast Saturday morning, we changed to the small jib before leaving the mooring. We should have rigged the second reef on the main as well.

Winds built steadily during the afternoon in Vineyard Sound, eventually gusting to nearly 30 knots.

In the harbor at Oak Bluffs, we practiced using the bo's'n's chair. The folks on the sidewalk loved it.

Leaving the Canal headed home. The forecast of 10-15 knot winds proved optimistic.
